My Progress This Year
What have you learnt this year?
I have learnt a great deal of new skills throughout all elements of production. In pre-production particularly I gained a lot from the casting process in the real world. Having never casted external actors before, I was sceptical at first to whether I would be successful in the endeavour to attempt to use a casting call service, and if to whether it's worth it as it could potentially waste valuable time. However I decided to try it, and thankfully it went very well, I learnt  how to post jobs and deal with candidates and their applications, also in how to confer and liaise with them about confirmed parts and unfortunate "maybe next times". In production, I learnt a great deal about directing, as this was complete new to me, having done other roles in previous tasks. I really enjoyed directing, I felt that I was successful with everything that we did on the shoot day, as well as keeping on time throughout the whole day. We've previously done some work in class about directing actors, and this came in handy on the shoot, yet the situation was different, and I had to cope, manage and utilise real industry actors to the max. In post-production the main skill I developed was sound dubbing and editing, my other colleague did most of the editing, but I occasionally helped with cleaning the sound. I have previously never used sound editing software much, so familiarising myself as well as figuring out effects and tool was challenging, but the sound turned out successful in the end, so I was very pleased.

How do you feel you have progressed from Chase to Preliminary to Main Tasks? Identify personal strengths and weaknesses, give examples to support your points.
I feel my ability to manipulate technologies, and develop skills in particular production roles has increased tremendously between the tasks. In the chase, I was new to the subject having not done media before, so I felt my skills were quite limited. However in the progression to the preliminary task, I worked with different people, one of whom who had done media before, so she showed a whole new range of tips and tricks, plus knowledge on how to produce a production successfully and to a good standard. Finally, to the main task, I used all the new skills that I have learnt and developed, such as editing, and producing to create a great film.
Strengths
- Creating documentation
- Liaising with companies (for locations) and actors
- Prop creating (such as a dead body)
- Directing
- Producing
- Editing
Weaknesses
- Camera Operating
- Drawing (Storyboards)

To expand on a strength, I felt I was efficient in terms of producing professional looking documentation, such as risk assessments and permission forms. I made a template that I used for all the documentation, even things we sent out to actors and external organisations. At times I can be very organised, and I personally like to keep things looking professional and consistent.

On the other hand, throughout the year I realised that I wasn't a very good camera operator; I was never officially the camera man, but when I got to fill in temporarily, I discovered I actually was not very good at it. Due to the tasks I have also realised that I do not like being a camera operator, and would steer away from it in a future career, but still would love a job in the industry.

If you decide to do this at Year13 what would you like to develop further?
I am definitely continuing the subject at year 13, the year has been fantastic, and I have enjoyed all the projects no matter how stressful they sometimes became. I would love to develop my directing and producing skills; I have seen how when I put my mind to it and focus, I can be very organised so I feel the producer role is one I'd like to look into further. The skills of time management need to be improved between now and year 13 to make myself successful in that role, but I think I can manage and rise up to that. During the last shoot specifically I felt, and decided that I enjoyed being the directer and that I would to to experience or develop more skills in that role.
